In my last post, I posted a picture of a strange contraption and asked if anyone could identify what it is used for (see picture below). Jennifer came pretty close- it does shoot powder into the air pretty quickly.

What does this thing do?!?! |
This contraption is...
 |
A-ha! |
a vintage hemline marker! As you can see in the picture above, the silver part of the device attaches to the inside of a door. The young seamstress, in her terribly long skirt, stands in front of the skirt marker and squeezes the bulb to mark the length that she would like for her skirt. She then turns and continues the process until her skirt has been marked all the way around.
Strange or unique contraptions, such as this vintage hemline marker, would be a fun way to introduce the topic of inventions into the classroom. Students could be shown this invention and, much like you, be asked to come up with its possible uses. This would be a real fun class activity, since students could come up with some crazy uses for this contraption. The class could then discuss inventions from the US (
click here to see a page devoted to US inventors and their inventions) and then move on to the topic of inventions from their home countries. Finally, students could invent their own crazy contraptions to be shared with their classmates. This could include both a written assignment (to improve the students' writing) and a drawing assignment (to appeal to more visual students and to encourage the students' creativity).
This is so funny!!! I can't believe you could find something like this or that something like this existed. Great find and great idea on how to use it in the classroom.
ReplyDeletethe device is a face powderer!
ReplyDeletea similar device does the same thing except the contents is perfume.
You know, I just realized I am also a thrift store shopper and seller!
Only difference is that I do all my shopping online. I love Amazon! I have a merchant acct and I sell all types of stuff on Amazon. I also find really cool used dvd movies and books.
Lately I have been doing my own automotive work such as oil changes, weather stripping changes, valve cover gasket, and fuel filter. These parts are expensive but I found them for a fraction of the price online.
I love finding deals!
Haha I would be scared to use this thing to apply makeup to my face! That's cool that you're a thrift seller! My goal for the summer is to finally open a vintage store online that my friend and I have been talking about for ages... what with school and work both of us haven't had a chance to work on it, but this summer we're going to work to finally get it off the ground and running!
